Together with nature – craftsmanship and partnership built on mutual respect
Even today, the Speick plant is far more than simply the signature ingredient of our products. Harvesting it is a unique craft mastered by not many Alpine farmers. To this day, wild-growing Speick is harvested at around 1,800 metres above sea level in what is now the UNESCO Nockberge Biosphere Reserve in Carinthia, Austria. The harvest is carried out by local Alpine farming families between mid-August and mid-September, when the plant’s small leaves begin to turn yellow. At this time, the plants release their characteristic spicy Speick fragrance.
The harvest is carried out carefully and lovingly by hand, allowing the plant to regenerate in the best possible way. This tradition has been passed down through generations. The Speick harvest provides Alpine farmers with an additional source of income while helping to preserve a longstanding regional tradition. For us, this living heritage makes it possible to offer our customers around the world truly unique products.
The importance of this close relationship with both the Alpine farmers and the Speick plant is reflected in a tradition: following each annual harvest, the dried plants are personally collected by our management team and transported to our company headquarters in Leinfelden-Echterdingen. A yearly highlight for everyone involved.
